Education MEC impressed by school

The MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, visited Shongwe Boarding School as part of his school support visit programme.

Shongwe Boarding School was established in 2012 and has an enrolment of 812 learners, most of whom are from eight neighbouring farms.

The boarding school caters for grades R to 12. During his visit, Majuba said he was encouraged by the overall performance of the school despite some day-to-day challenges they experienced.

“I am pleased with the way the boarding school is being managed. The learner performance is a true reflection of the leadership qualities of this institution. The department will look into the infrastructural challenges presented by the school management in order to improve and assist with the efficient and effective administration and management of the whole institution. To this end, I will in due course deliver a detailed report in this regard,” committed Majuba.

Boarding schools in the province were conceptualised to guarantee the provision of quality education and to reduce the drop-out rate for learners from farm areas.

The grade 12 performance for the past four years has been above 90 per cent at Shongwe. In 2020, the school obtained a 93,6 per cent pass rate.
