Uncle sentenced to life behind bars for rape

A 35-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment following the rape of his 10-year-old niece.

The rape in question took place on Christmas Eve of 2019. The man was sentenced last Thursday by the Mkobola Regional Court.

The court convicted the accused after details were heard on how the young girl became a victim at the hands of a man who was supposed to have protected her.

On December 24, 2019, the little girl was playing on the veranda when the uncle called her to his room which was at the back of the main house. She reportedly refused to go to her uncle’s room.

He then dragged her to his room and tied her with a rope before raping her repeatedly. She later escaped after begging him to let her go and get food.

The girl’s mother, who was away at the  time, came back and got worried when she could not fi nd her daughter or the uncle in the main house. The mother then went to her neighbours to look for her daughter, but without any success. The mother came back to the house and was shocked to see her daughter walking strangely.

The girl then narrated her story to her mother. The girl was then taken to the doctor and it was confi rmed that she had indeed been raped. The accused tried to convince the girl’s mother not to lay charges against him, but the matter was eventually reported to the police.

Upon hearing that a case had been opened against him, he decided to run and went into hiding at one of his family members. His family instead sought justice for the girl and they handed him over to police and he was been behind bars until the day of his sentence.
