25 000 vehicles stopped and searched on the N4

About 4 000 summons were served to motorists for various offences ranging from reckless driving, overspeeding, skipping of traffic lights and not wearing safety belts, among others.

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, joined law enforcers in manning the flow of traffic at the Lebombo Port of Entry on Family Day, Monday April 5.

More than 25 000 vehicles were stopped and searched along the N4 toll road over the Easter weekend.

“About 4 000 summons were served to motorists for various offences ranging from reckless driving, overspeeding, skipping of traffic lights and not wearing safety belts, among others,” he said. The visit formed part of the department’s Easter road safety plan.

Shongwe witnessed the arrests of several motorists for a number of transgressions. Three men were apprehended after being linked to a case of stolen vehicles worth more than R1,9 million. Law enforcers confiscated counterfeit goods worth an estimated value of R2,5 million.

According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the department, the day also saw more than 2 000 visitors and returning citizens being tested for Covid-19 at the border. “A total of 13 of them tested positive for Covid-19-related illnesses. They were turned back and were not allowed to enter the country,” he said. Ten drivers were also arrested for alleged drinking and driving. This comes after their breathalyser test results were positive.
