Youth encouraged to sow seeds and reap their own rewards

With agriculture quickly becoming more popular within the black community, the new provincial MEC for agriculture, Mandla Msibi, intends making this industry even more popular among young people.

“It is an open secret that agriculture remains the backbone of our economy and it would be such a shame and fallacy if young people were to be left out of participating in the growth of both our agricultural and economic sectors.“

“For this sector to grow and flourish, we need more young people ready to take us to the next level and revolutionise the way we see agriculture. Just like the premier said in her State of the Province Address when she highlighted that agriculture remains one of the most employment-intensive sectors of our economy, it is the only industry that has the potential of propelling our people from abject poverty into prosperity. And it is mainly for this reason that I intend getting more young people to be involved in farming and participate in the economy,” said Msibi.

He argued that many young people are unemployed due to a lack of employment opportunities, but believed that the answer to this problem lies within their hands.

Msibi said young people need to move away from the mentality of wanting to be employed to be employers themselves.

“Sad but true, many young people are still waiting for government to create jobs for them. Yes, some will get employment from government, but the truth is many are likely to miss out and so the only solution is to wake up and start using your hands. There are many opportunities and programmes within this department aimed at supporting our people who want to become involved in agriculture,” he continued. Msibi said he is passionate about young people and wished for them to actively participate in farming to fi ght poverty while at the same time helping to grow the economy.“

“I want to see a situation where young people are proud owners of successful farms and producers and distributors of quality meat to our butcheries. I long to see young people creating employment and business opportunities for other young people within this sector. This is a legacy I want to leave behind and be remembered for,” said Msibi.
