Votes called for school governing bodies

The MEC for education in Mpumalanga, Bonakele Majuba, requested all parents and guardians of children of schoolgoing age to participate in the election of school governing bodies (SGB).

Parents can do so by selecting eligible candidates to be members of SGBs or stand to be elected themselves.

The MEC also requested parents who are professionals to agree to be coopted to the SGBs to utilise their professional skills to add value to the governance of schools.

The process of electing SGBs commenced on Monday March 1 and is expected to be completed by Friday April 30 at all public schools.

These elections take place after a three-year cycle and were previously held in March 2018 in line with the prescripts of the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996.

These elections will be held under the theme ‘reimagining school governance under complex conditions.’ SGBs are accountable to the school community and are tasked with ensuring that the governance of schools is managed effectively and effi ciently at all times.
