Local radio station hits the big seven

This day, seven years ago, this subregion, the biggest in the province, welcomed a newborn baby who screamed and made noise from dawn to dusk.

This baby was named Nkomazi FM.

A brainchild of Nkomazi people, for the people, this community radio station has grown from just being there to make up the numbers to being a powerhouse, with interesting, strong content and the best entertainment, proving that Nkomazi, given the opportunity, can be the Soweto of Mpumalanga.

“In the Scripture, seven often symbolises completion or perfection, and in Genesis it tells us that God created the heavens and the earth in six days, and, upon completion. He rested on the seventh day. And, so for us to be able to reach and get to celebrate our seventh anniversary, means the heavens and earth,” said station manager, Makhosi Zulu, as he shared the journey thus far.

He said it had not been easy, as they encountered many obstacles along the way, but through grace and the community’s support they pulled through. “A whole seven years of broadcasting and creating beautiful memories together with the community of Nkomazi and beyond is like a dream come true. To achieve this milestone is nie pap en vleis nie. It requires determination, dedication and most of all, perseverance.

“It was not easy. We had no financial muscle behind us, as we are still lacking at the present moment. But somehow, we soldiered on as we are doing now,”
continued Zulu. This radio station, like many community radio stations, especially in this province, started with no financial support, but today they boast over 50 000 listeners and Facebook likes.

“We would like to thank all the local businesses, business people and the entire Nkomazi community for their unfathomable support and loyalty.

“The station would not be where it is today if it weren’t for the entire crew, from presenters to cleaners, and we owe them a big deal for sharing their talents with our community and listeners.

“The next years ahead for us mean living in #TheNewNormal and we’re excited to have you tag along. We are relaunching our digital presence today.
By going live on www.nkomazi-fm.co.za you can listen to your favourite station wherever you are.

“The live stream will go simultaneously with our podcasts that we are also ecstatic about. In our bid to reduce close human interaction during this pandemic, for general info and music submissions, email info@nkomazi-fm.co.za or music@ nkomazi-fm.co.za.

“For our active and engaging listeners, our WhatsApp number, 081-894-2701, is available for voice notes so you can contribute your opinions on our
programmes.

“We can’t wait to share with you more developmental news that will tickle your hearts… Happy birthday to us, and cheers to many more years of airwaves,” said a joyful Zulu.
