Government steps in to assess flood damage

The acting director-general, Peter Nyoni, led a high-profile team of HODs, municipal managers and engineers to the D2296 on Sunday, where a bridge had collapsed.

The bridge, linking Tekwane South, Entokozweni and KaNyamazane, collapsed on Friday night after a sinkhole had developed there following the recent heavy rainfall. The police and emergency services have confirmed that no one was hurt when it had collapsed.

“We understand what has happened here and it is important for us as officials to move with speed to assess the damage. I am happy that the Department of Public Works, the City of Mbombela Local Municipality and the Ehlanzeni District Municipality are here to help us. “We must move with speed, not only to access the damage, but also to quantify so that we quickly present a detailed report to the executive to declare the situation or state of affairs as a disastrous one.

“This will enable the government to access funding to get our infrastructure back on its feet again,” said Nyoni when he addressed the team of HODs and relevant stakeholders. This move was applauded by community members who came out to see what was happening. Many who spoke to Mpumalanga News said this is the government in action they have been longing for. “This is the kind of government we voted for. The one that quickly responds to our needs.

“We need to give credit where it is due and I believe that this government is now on the right track. The sooner they attend to this problem, the better for all of us,” said Sidwell Dlamini, a resident of Entokozweni. Nyoni urged his troops to unite and work with speed so that the people can get back to their lives. “It is our responsibility to respond to this disaster. I know that my principals will be here on Monday to also assess the situation, but I am grateful that you are all here today.” He asked for the City of Mbombela Local Municipality and the Department of Safety and Security to work together and deploy more traffic officials to help with traffic, especially during peak hours.
