Amapiano reveals its real McCoy in true style

Mpumalanga's own first lady of amapiano, True McCoy, is ready to dish up what she has been cooking in her musical kitchen.

Born and baptised Trudy Thobejane, this eMalahleni-born amapiano music sensation, signed under the banner of MI Music, has already released a four-track EP available for download on all digital platforms.

With the entire country currently jamming to the amapiano wave, McCoy said she was also enamoured by this type of music and when the opportunity presented itself, she did not think twice about the type of music she wanted to do.

“I have always been a kwaito and house music fan, but then amapiano happened and I was blown away. I really liked how the genre was conceptualised and how it came into being. I was also taken aback by the style and the dance moves.

“I knew then this was where I belong. I saw myself fitting right into this type of music,” she said, explaining how she got to do amapiano over other genres such as gospel, soul and R & B.

She calls herself an accidental musician, because she never once thought she would one day become a recording artist, but she is determined nevertheless to leave an everlasting legacy in this industry.

McCoy was actually discovered during the peak of lockdown last year, when she was working for one of the Mpumalanga online music shows, The Link Up Online, hosted at the popular 013.

“I was actually presenting the show and I was required to freestyle until Cliff Mei, founder and owner of MI Music, suggested that I try creating something original. We went to studio and came out with this and I’m loving it. I hope music lovers, especially amapiano fans, are loving it too,” she beamed.

For the EP, McCoy has worked with the likes of Eric Code, Eskae Amigo and Cliff, and plans to shoot a music video for the “Kunzima” track.

“I am already back in studio working on something new and fresh. I want to create music that will be played and enjoyed by the whole nation. My dream is to have my music used in movies and drama series, both nationally and internationally,” she said.

The only thing that stands in her way is Covid-19, which she said is making it difficult to promote her music and to get booked to perform in events. “I had so many bookings for the festive season, but these events had to be cancelled because of lockdown, and I missed out on a great opportunity to take my music out there,” she said.
