Eight people die on the roads of the province in one day

Another  four people were killed when a sedan overturned on the R33 between Belfast and Stoffberg.

On December 26, eight people were killed in two major accidents on the roads of the province.

Four people lost their lives on the R543 road between Mkhondo and Mahamba when a Light  Delivery Vehicle overturned at 18:00.

“The  victims were all passengers. They died at the scene. Eight other people including the driver, sustained serious injuries while others were slightly injured. The injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital,” explained Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

“Although the investigation into the crash is underway, earlier indications are that the driver of the vehicle may have lost control before the crash. More information will follow,” he added.

Another  four people were killed when a sedan overturned on the R33 between Belfast and Stoffberg.

The deceased were all males and they included the driver of the vehicle.

They all died at the scene.

“It is believed that the driver lost control and this caused the vehicle to overturn. The investigation into the crash is underway,” said Mmusi.

MEC Gabisile Shabalala once more called on motorists to use the roads cautiously so that loss of lives brought on by road crashes is avoided.

“We must all play our part to end misery that is caused to many families by crashes on the road by adhering to road safely rules. Every driver should prioritise their own safety and that of other road users,” concluded Shabalala.
