‘Obani Lababantu’ hitmaker is no more

News of her death has flooded the Internet with many paying tributes to her.

This morning South Africa woke up to the sad news of the passing away of inspirational amapiano star, Gee Six Five.

The 65-year-old hitmaker, whose real name was Olpha Selepe, from Emadadeni in KwaZulu-Natal, died just a few weeks after finding fame across the borders of the country and beyond with her single “Obani Lababantu”.

Her song went viral and even topped the iTunes music charts. Thousands of South Africans streamed and shared it.

She had told the media that she wanted to show the world that anyone can pursue their dreams regardless of their age. Gee Six Five was a retired teacher who completed her masters at the age of 63. She was pursuing her PhD in higher education. The devastating news was confirmed by her niece, Sbu Mpungose, in the early hours of Wednesday.
