Have we turned into a nation that relies on handouts in order to survive?

With the lockdown still in place, it looks like the lives of people of South Africa are still uncertain.

Recently, there have been talks doing rounds that President Cyril Ramaphosa was thinking of moving the country back to alert level 3 as Covid-19 cases are not subsiding.

There were mixed reactions on the streets as some people feel that we are not doing enough to curb the spread of the virus, while others argue that returning to level 3, as things are now, will permanently collapse the country and the ailing economy.

When asked, Ramaphosa vehemently denied it. “It is simply not true that a move back to lockdown level 3 is pending,” he told the National Council of Provinces last week. However, he said he will study a new report and said the government has observed some worrying trends.

“The government continues to analyse and manage the situation with the assistance of the medical advisory committee,” he said. So now we know that we are not moving back to lockdown level 3 until the president has read the report and sought advice and recommendations from his counterparts.

Then, a question arises… Why do some people want us to return to level 3? Is it because they care a lot about the safety and health of the country?

Then someone said the answers lie with the complaints that began to surface at the beginning of October, the month where all the perks relating to Covid-19 social relief measures came to an end.

Do we want to return to level 3 because we want the social relief grants to be reimplemented or extended to two more months? Have we turned into a nation that relies on handouts in order to survive?

Well, we may not have specific answers right now except that this might be true.
