Get to know Brandon of Idols SA

In grade one his teacher would always complain about his lack of concentration. He would turn his desk into a drum while she was teaching

Watching your child achieve one of his greatest dreams is a fulfilling feeling for a mother. This is how Brandon Dhludhlu’s mom, Nurse Maseko describes watching her son competing in Idols SA season 16 on Mzansi Magic.

Dhludhlu is currently in the top seven and stands a chance to be the next Idols SA winner. According to Maseko, his passion for music started as a young boy.

“In grade one his teacher would always complain about his lack of concentration. He would turn his desk into a drum while she was teaching; he even had to repeat the grade – that is how much he loved music. I remember a time during the festive season when his grandma had taken him shopping for Christmas clothes. To my surprise when they came back, he had opted to buy a guitar.”

Maseko said her son first appeared on Idols SA two years ago, however, he had not made it this far.

“When I first saw him, I was excited and could not believe that his dream is actually becoming a reality. When they announced the top 16 for season 16 and realised that my son had made it, I cried tears of joy. I was so happy. I remember on one occasion after Brandon had performed, my neighbour came into my house and started celebrating with us.

Since my son started performing live on Idols my life has also changed. When I walk in the streets some community members refer to me as ‘Makwe li celebrity’ (Mother of a celebrity). He has shown and proved to us that all is possible when you put your mind to it, I am behind him all the way in his music career,” she explained.

“I wish the public would also know my Xolani, as we call him at home. He does not only sing, but he also helps with me with the chores. My son is an introvert; very shy yet helpful at home. He cleans and is a great cook.

Lungelo, his younger sister, and Mncedisi, his younger brother, miss him because he takes care of them.” Maseko added that as much as Dhludhlu is helpful in the house, he hates gardening. Despite all of this, she said when he started his musical journey, she was worried.

“My family and I never liked the idea at first, we never liked the idea of him being an artist. This is because the music industry at times can be extremely cruel. I always imagined him in another career. Having a stable job with a stable income and pursuing his studies. However, that thought has changed with time. I now wish and pray that as a musician he can grow further and can have his own production company,” Maseko said.

There are two contestants from Mpumalanga left in the competition, Brandon Dhludhlu and Zama Khumalo. The show is broadcast on Mzansi Magic on Sunday.
