1 000 less fortunate families will receive food parcels

The donation was delivered to the Mpumalanga Food Bank, known as Kagko Yabana, and received by the MEC for social development, Blessing Thandi Shongwe, on behalf of the department.

A total of 1 000 needy families will receive food parcels. The Department of Social Development received the donation from SPAR Lowveld on Thursday. This initiative is part of providing social relief for distress to underprivileged families around the province.

The donation was delivered to the Mpumalanga Food Bank, known as Kagko Yabana, and received by the MEC for social development, Blessing Thandi Shongwe, on behalf of the department. “I am happy to receive the donation and to see the amazing work SPAR does for the community.”

The food parcels will be the distributed to the identified families around the province in the three regions. They were identified by departmental social workers, social auxiliary workers and community development workers.

“These families were visited by the social workers and they know their situations. The parcels are collected by the food bank, delivered to the different regions and distributed to the beneficiaries.

Almost all of that which they will need is covered since this food parcel has a variety of things. There is staple food, veggies and fruit too. ” Shongwe urged people to support SPAR because of the work it does for the public. “I shop there and the food is fresh.”

Before handing out the food to some of the families, she spoke to them just to have a gain understanding of their circumstances. There were four family representatives who attended the handover.

Hlobisine Mziyako (27), one of the beneficiaries from Barberton, said, “As a single mother it has not been easy to provide for the family, the food parcel will make a huge difference.

I submitted my details during lockdown level 5, although we have waited since then, this donation has come at the time when we need it the most. I am grateful to be one of the families who received a donation.” SPAR Lowveld supports different initiatives in the community.
