Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison in partnership with Syntell handed over the new uniforms last week.

MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Gabisile Tshabalala said the aim was to help reduce road accidents.

“We are happy that today we are visiting a school where we can give them equipment in terms of road safety and scholar patrol. They have been engaging all these years with the department, therefore the purpose of today was to ensure they have all the equipment they need to continue with such programmes,” she explained.

“We want to fight the scourge of our people dying on the roads. We are happy that the percentage of accidents has been reduced. This is can be contributed to the awareness and all the programmes that we have launched since the financial year started. We did this by communicating through our community radios and newspapers so our people could get the message.”

Tshabalala called on all the businesses to support schools when it comes to safety and scholar patrol.

  TRAFFIXSA is a South African traffic management company with the aim of providing practical and innovative traffic management solutions at a local, provincial and national government level.

Mishack Mahlangu of the company said due to his experience, he understands the challenges that are faced on the roads.

  Theu Theu Primary’s principal, Timothy Dlamini said, “We are truly grateful that out of at all the schools that will receive the scholar patrol uniform, ours was chosen to host the handover.”     According to the department, statistics indicate that the majority of accidents that happen in South Africa claim the lives of pedestrians. Some of them include schoolchildren, hence various programmes on road safety are implemented.
