Masoyi community marches against gender-based violence

They demand the SAPS to commit themselves to end the scourge and all forms of crime in Masoyi.

Hundreds of people from this community and surrounding areas recently held a peaceful march to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV). Dressed in black, the marchers, mostly the youth from places around Numbi, braved the scorching sun when they walked from Dayizenza Plaza to Masoyi Police Station. Sizwe Justice Mdluli, the organiser, said the protest’s aim entailed the police doing more to end GBV-related crimes in the area.

“Our demand was a simple call on the SAPS to commit themselves to end the scourge and all forms of crime in Masoyi,” he said. This comes shortly after the alleged abduction and murder of 14-year-old Zinhle Dorothy Sekgoapa of Chochocho. She went missing on September 16. Her decomposed body was discovered in her home’s pit toilet. Her head had been covered with a plastic bag. Police investigations led to the arrest of her 18-year-old cousin, Kgaugelo Sibuyi. “The whole scenario hurts us deeply as a community. We feel unsafe and don’t know who or whose child might be kidnapped next if some of the suspects are still on the streets. Therefore we organised the march to voice our concerns to the local police,” said Mdluli.
