Health MEC honours ‘fallen soldiers’

The reopening of schools means the movement of schoolchildren from home to school and back.

Therefore we need to take extra precautionary measures.  Adhering to all the health protocols will go a long way in protecting the elderly at home, who are vulnerable to the pandemic and continue to look after our children.

This was the appeal by the MEC for health, Sasekani Manzini, during her monthly report on the state of the Covid-19 pandemic in the province.

Manzini appealed to young people to avoid social and recreational gatherings, particularly now that some lockdown regulations have been relaxed.

“The virus is not gone, we must normalise coexisting with the pandemic,” she said. Manzini said as of September 1, the province had reported 24 447 positive cases.

“For epidemiological week 35 (August 23 to 29) a daily average of 147 cases have been recorded. The highest reported number of new cases occurred on August 26, with 211 being reported.

Over 22 900 patients have recovered from Covid-19 in the province, with 1 157 active cases. “Regrettably, 351 Covid-19 deaths have been reported in Mpumalanga,” announced Manzini.

The Nkangala District accounted for the majority of confirmed cases in the province, with it contributing 38 per cent to all confirmed cases. Ehlanzeni District has the highest number of active cases with 406 (35 per cent).

eMalahleni, Steve Tshwete, Govan Mbeki and the City of Mbombela are the major hotspots and record high numbers of cases.

The City of Mbombela has recorded 4 071 cases, 3 779 recoveries and 37 active cases, with six deaths.

Govan Mbeki has 3 351 cases, 3 153 recoveries, 160 active cases and 28 deaths. Steve Tshwete has recorded
2 391 cases, 2 208 recoveries, 140 active cases and 43 deaths.

eMalahleni has recorded 5 100 cases, 4 880 recoveries, 163 active cases and 57 deaths. “Our data shows that females account for 55 per cent of the overall cases in the province.

The majority are recorded in the 30 to 39 years age group (28 per cent), followed by 20 per cent from the 40 to 49 years age group.

“This shows that these cases come from the economically active working category,” she continued.
The province has 1 152 healthcare workers who were affected by Covid-19 and 64,8 per cent (747) of them have since recovered.

“There are currently 396 active cases. It is with a heavy heart to report that we have lost nine healthcare workers who succumbed to the fury of Covid-19.

The department would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the fallen soldiers. May their souls rest in peace,” concluded Manzini as she paid tribute to all healthcare workers.
