Criminals steal over R1 million in school property at Lekazi Primary

At least one suspect has been arrested in connection with the burglary, which, according to the school governing body (SGB) and the police, took place during the lockdown period.

The suspect was arrested last Monday after a police investigation and is due to appear in court on June 24.

This school has been a target for criminals since the country was forced into lockdown due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

“It is sad that there are community members who saw an opportunity during this lockdown to go and vandalise and steal from our schools.

“I am going to personally work very close with the provincial police commissioner, Gen Mondli Zuma, to ensure there is a thorough investigation. I want to see people arrested and charged. It cannot be business as usual until we have arrested all those involved here,” said safety and security MEC, Gabisile Shabalala, during her visits to KaNyamazane Police Station and the school.

The spokesperson for education, Jasper Zwane, said his department will send officials to assess the situation and advise on the course of action to be undertaken going forward.

“The department is highly disturbed by the break-in that took place at this school. A case has been opened and investigations have begun. We are making a humble plea to community members not to buy stolen goods as it is against the law and perpetuates crime,” appealed Zwane.
