Attorney rises to success like the Mpumalanga sun

One of the young people from the province making a mark in the legal field, who deserves to be celebrated this Youth Month, is Nonhlanhla Ouma Mthethwa.

MBOMBELA – The 35-year-old legal practitioner in criminal litigation is attached to Legal Aid South Africa at the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court.

She specialises in sexual offence cases and related matters.

She said that hard work and passion for her job had got her this far.
“This work is my life. I love my work and it has taught me to always dig deeper when handling cases, since some are sad and depressing while some are just pure fabrications,” she said.

She said in her career, she has had to deal with hundreds of cases, winning some and losing some.

“Whether a matter was successful or not, I find joy when I receive a comment and feedback from a client saying, “Thank you, you did your best,” she said.

Mthethwa is testament that one’s background has nothing to do with one’s success and the future. She urged the youth to work hard towards making their dreams a reality.

Raised by her grandparents after the death of her mother, she grew to be the strong woman she is today, learning to firmly stand her ground from an early age.

Being raised in a family that could not read and write forced her to work hard. Her grandfather instilled values and a sense of independence in her from a young age.

“That resulted in me being the first graduate in my family and the first to even drive and own a car,” she giggled.
She matriculated at Ed-u-College in 2002 and went to the University of the North where she obtained her LLB

Degree and Diploma in Labour Law in 2008.
She served her articles and was admitted as an attorney in 2011.

She has worked for various companies until her breakthrough in 2016 when she was appointed by Legal Aid South Africa as sexual offences and related matters legal practitioner.

“That challenged me to the core and I had to go through training to obtain the necessary skills and knowledge,” she said.
