Children protection week closed in style

“Social workers deserve better recognition for their role in fighting the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in South Africa because they risk their lives on a daily basis as they work directly with communities, thus running the risk of contracting the disease.”

This was uttered by the MEC for Social Development, Thandi Shongwe today at the Zwelo Community Center In Mkhondo when she officially closed Child Protection Week where she also donated duvets and other bedding material to the center housing young children and youth who were previously displaced and found refuge at the center.

“I’m happy to witness your dedication at this center in providing a home for these destitute children. I’m also gratified at the fact that you’re also providing skills development at this center which includes sewing and baking, among others.

“It’s good for these children that those among them who aren’t competent academically, can undertake vocational training.

That will provide them a good livelihood when the time to leave this center arrives when they turn 18 years and above.

“As it’s winter time and your area is very cold, I will send blankets to keep you warm, but it’s very important for you to ensure you get educated.

You’re lucky because the National Minister for Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu has promised to speak to the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande to offer bursaries to children from shelters.
