Young amapiano DJs getting down on the dance floors and airwaves

For most amapiano artists it is all about people getting down to their rhythmic beats and letting loose on the dance floor.

MAGOGENI –  However, for Nkomazi’s finest trio it is also about sending out a message of support and how to overcome low self-esteem, poverty and crime.

Wandile “DJ Mawaza” Nkosi (26), Stability “Billy Variation” Ngomane (24) and Siyabonga “DJ Mnetfu Humphey” Nkalanga (22), come from a small village named Magogeni in Nkomazi.

They kickstarted their career in 2017 and released their first Amapiano EP in 2019. “We have had a major response from people all over the country including Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and of course, Mpumalanga,” said Nkalanga. The trio has been securing gigs in mainly Tembisa and Soweto, and has managed to score a few interviews with different radio stations in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

They informed Lowvelder that they sent one of their instrumentals to record producer and businessman, DJ Oskido, and he loved their work. “It brought us great joy and he said he would love to work with us. We also look forward to collaborating with Zano on our next EP,” said Nkalanga.

Like most aspiring artists they have their own challenges, but this only pushes them to work harder. “We do not have proper equipment such as soundproofing. We usually record at night as it is quiet. We have tried to approach businessmen in our area to help us in our journey and see this as an investment, but have not received assistance as yet,” said Nkalanga.

They expressed how they love what they do, but they wish they could get more support from the people of Mpumalanga. “We hope people from the province will be inspired by our work and support us, as we promise not to disappoint them,” said Ngomane.
