Department of economic development and tourism receives donation of 1168 food parcels for lockdown affected families in the province

Following a plea to corporate citizens to assist families, whose livelihood has been affected by the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism on Thursday received a donation of 1168 food parcels.

Mbombela –  The donation was received by Finance, Economic Development and Tourism MEC, Pat Ngomane, in Mkhondo and Nkomazi, on behalf of the Department.

“We are truly thankful to the South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA), for their prompt response to our plea. They understand and share the plight of our people, whose livelihood has been affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. This donation will augment the excellent job of distributing food parcels to destitute families in our Province, by our sister Department of Social Development. And I must add that when handing over the food parcels, we will adhere to all guidelines provided by Social Development”, explained the MEC.

Six-hundred (600) food parcels will be distributed to destitute families, child-headed households, grannies, and informal traders in Mkhondo and Lekwa today (Friday, 22 May 2020). The remaining 568 food parcels will be distributed to the same categories of people in the Nkomazi local municipality on Saturday, 23 May 2020.

“This is the partnership we require from the private sector; to plough back to their communities. It shows that they are good corporate citizens; we urge other businesses to emulate them, and hear the loud cry of the less fortunate within our communities”, concluded Mr Ngomane.
