Parents warned about traveling with children during lockdown

Several vehicles were turned back at the cross border joint operation roadblock entered into between Mpumalanga and Gauteng on Friday.

LEANDRA – Children travelling with their parents during this lockdown period, is one of the prevalent problems across the country.

This further surfaced in an address by the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Gabisile Shabalala at the cross border joint operation roadblock entered into between Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces.

“It has been clearly stipulated under the Covid-19 pandemic that children should stay at. But at these roadblocks, we encounter people traveling with children, worse still, from province to province.”

She also mentioned that on approaching roadblocks, children are obviously coached to cry when authorities object to their presence.

“We only let through children in a co-parenting arrangement. That is  accompanied by a court order and birth certificates. Other than that, children are only allowed to travel only for funerals, whereby, full proof of funeral is produced in the form of a death certificate and affidavit,” said Shabalala.

She explained that the whole exercise is done in an effort to protect children from contracting the virus in line with every other individual in the country.

“In essence, we’re not tolerant to non-compliance to the set Covid19 pandemic regulations.

We do not take kindly to adults reaching a roadblock and begin to lie for holding falsified permits permits and other documents, including those of children who are tossed up and down from province to province.”

Her sentiments were concurred by her counterpart, Faith Mazibuko who said that the joint operations are yielding results as both provinces are protecting each other from the virus.
