No Covid-19 cases reported yet at Barberton Correctional Services

According to the department, only two out of 243 centres have reported positive cases of the virus thus far.

There have been no positive coronavirus cases reported in correctional services centers in the province, to date.

According to communications manager, Messiah Hlungwani, regular screening is conducted on all officials and service providers when entering facilities.

“We have no positive cases yet and we continue to ensure that the staff and inmates remain safe.”

He explained that the screening procedure includes a questionnaire and scanning each individual’s forehead to check their temperature.

“Those who show symptoms are referred to the Department of Health for testing.

Our prison cells are regularly disinfected, inmates are also given two bars of soap monthly and there is running water in all centers,” said Hlungwani.

Thabo Hlatswayo (46), who is serving a life sentence at the Barberton Correctional Facility said he is satisfied with the measures put in place by the DCS to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

“We understand how serious this is and have information on the virus. As much as we miss our families, we encourage them to stay home until the number of positive cases decreases. Right now, the country is on Lockdown so let us stay safe until we beat this virus,” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of inmates testing positive for COVID-19 at East London Correctional facility increased by 49 cases on Tuesday.
