Cross-border roadblock yields results

The roadblock was set up on the R40 to ensure that people do not violet lockdown regulations.

ACORNHOEK – A joint operation by Mpumalanga and Limpopo members of the South African Police Services and the South African National Defence Force conducted a roadblock at the border of the province and Limpopo on Saturday.

The roadblock was set up on the R40 to ensure that people do not violate lockdown regulations. Only those with permits were allowed to drive from one province to another.

The MEC of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Gabisile Shabalala and the Provincial Commissioner, General Mondli Zuma also joined the operation and said they are doing all they can to enforce compliance.

Zuma said: “To a large extent, people are complying, it’s only a few areas where there’s no compliance. The roadblock minimises our resources and combines our effort. No one had to bring more equipment and personnel than the other.

“We’ve got nurses and are servicing people that are coming in and out of the province. There is also another roadblock at Bronkorspruit bordering the province and Gauteng. We want to minimise the numbers of people moving from one province to ours.
“There’s been an upsurge when it comes to infections in the province and we want to make sure that we enforce compliance,” he said.

Shabalala mentioned the compliance of shops which still needs clear communication by National.

“I’ve seen a change in various areas compared to when the lockdown started. Our people were ignorant and reluctant about regulations. But currently, we believe they are trying and know that during this time, people want to move from one province to another. We’ve got a few cars coming into our operation. That tells you that people are beginning to understand the importance of staying at home. We are only going to allow funerals to take place. You have to produce a death certificate as proof. Either than that, there will be no functions that will take place in the province,” she said.
