Victims lose faith after Tekwane South shooting

Simphiwe Mnisi’s home had 13 bullet holes. He said the police are dragging their feet while they fear for the safety because the suspects are walking free.

KANYAMAZANE – A shooting incident which took place on February, to date, no arrests have been made and the victims are slowly losing faith in the police handling the case.

In the early hours of Monday, February 10, multiple shots were fired at three homes at Tekwane South leaving one resident, Mzamo Mnisi, injured on the spinal chord.

Mnisi was hospitalised at Rob Ferreira, but has since been discharged. However, the victims raised concerns of their safety. Simphiwe Mnisi’s home had 13 bullet holes. He said the police are dragging their feet, while they fear for their safety because the suspects are walking free.

“Just the other day, two shots were fired outside my home and I don’t know what message was being sent to me. At times I think I’m being followed,” he said.

Cases were opened which provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi confirmed. However, he said they were all transferred to the Hawks.

The Hawks’ provincial spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said their system indicates that the cases were still with a detective at the Kanyamazane police station especially pointing a finger at the Kanyamazane police station, accusing some of its detectives of ‘biasness and preferential treatment of suspects and hardened treatment of victims.’

Mnisi has alleged that instead of arresting the suspects, “When I inquired from the investigating officer, he alleged the suspect was evading arrest although we bump against him around the township daily.

“Instead, the officer requested that I bring Mzamo to the station. Instead of assisting with his case, he arrested him because the suspect had opened a counter case against him.

“This is not on, we’re getting a disservice from this station and want the intervention of the police commissioner before we break the lockdown regulations by the community staging a protest at the station,” ended Mnisi.
