The African National Congress in Mpumalanga is mourning its member, Chiky Sekgobela who passed on recently.

A memorial service will be held today at Ehlanzeni Disaster Management Centre in honour of Sekgobela was described as a resilient and fearless woman who fought against the apartheid forces.

“Sekgobela was a seasoned and disciplined ANC cadre who grew within the structures of the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM). She has been a pillar of struggle and opened her home as the base to hide and provide shelter that helped freedom fighters to transmit to exile before the 1990s. She was among the first cohort deployed to serve in the first democratic parliament in 1994 under President Nelson Mandela. During the 1980s, she was instrumental and actively participated in various MDM structures and played a role to establish the United Democratic Front (UDF). During this time, she remained a source of courage and strength as she stood firm against the injustices perpetrated the brutal apartheid regime. Sekgobela is credited with her bravery but also a kind and revolutionary love to the members of the community she spent her entire life to serving. Undoubtedly, she leaves a void that is almost impossible to fill,” read a statement from the provincial spokesperson, Sasekani Manzini.
