Stage 2 load-shedding implemented until Friday morning

Eskom has released a press release stating that the system remains severely constrained and unpredictable. Therefore load-shedding stage 2 will, unfortunately, have to continue from 08:00 today (Thursday January 9) to 06:00 tomorrow (Friday January 10).

“We have lost additional generation capacity overnight with breakdowns of over 14 000MW. Our emergency reserves are also insufficient to meet the demand for electricity during the day. As a result, we have to load-shed throughout the day until tomorrow,” the press release mentioned.

Eskom has assured that their teams will work tirelessly to return units from planned and unplanned outages.

“Owing to inadequate maintenance over a number of years, the system remains vulnerable to unplanned outages. We remind customers that load-shedding is an essential and controlled measure to ensure that the integrity of the grid is not compromised.”

In order to plan their activities, Eskom reminds customers that they can check their load-shedding schedules on the Eskom website or through the customer contact centre on 086-0037-566.

“We will give South Africans regular updates about our prognosis for tomorrow and our recovery efforts for the rest of the week leading into the weekend.”

Eskom continues to ask customers to reduce the demand as a concerted collective effort to help or reduce the level of load-shedding.

Wednesday, January 8: Overnight load-shedding highly likely

MBOMBELA – The power utility implemented stage 2 load-shedding from 01:00 until 06:00 this morning.

It said on Wednesday afternoon that it would likely implement this again this evening in order to replenish water resources for its pumped storage schemes and minimise the use of diesel at the open cycle gas turbines.

“The power system remains vulnerable,” the utility said in a statement.

“While we were able to replenish water levels at the pumped storage schemes overnight, we are currently using these emergency resources, including diesel, to meet demand today.

“In the event that we lose other generation units or are unable to bring back those that were out for maintenance, load-shedding may be implemented earlier in the day. We will keep customers informed of the status of the power system.”

Plant breakdowns (UCLF) are at 13 471 MW as of 06:00 this morning.

Eskom to implement stage 2 load-shedding from 01:00 until 06:00 – January, 18:41

MBOMBELA – Eskom announced on Tuesday that it will implement stage 2 load-shedding from 01:00 until 06:00 tomorrow morning.

“In order to minimise the impact of
load-shedding on South Africans, (it) is scheduled during early morning hours to maximise electricity availability during the working day,” it announced in a statement.

“Owing to a loss of additional generation capacity, emergency reserves had to be extensively utilised to supplement capacity during the day.

“These now need to be replenished to meet tomorrow’s demand. The system
remains constrained and unpredictable with breakdowns sitting at 13 600MW.

“In order to give matriculants an opportunity to receive their results, the
implementation of stage 2 load-shedding has been delayed to 01:00 on Wednesday.

“This decision will also allow them enough time to make their way
home safely.”

In Mbombela, Delta, Valencia, Orchards, Steiltes and KaMagugu will be affected from 01:00 until 03:30.
