KaNyamazane teacher is determined to show how fantastic maths is!

Local teacher goes the extra mile in helping learners understand Mathematics.

A local primary school teacher is on a mission to ensure that learners from primary schools fall in love with mathematics.

“My dream is to see the young ones viewing mathematics in a positive way and seeing it as one of the easiest subjects. I want to break the stigma associated with the subject. Mathematics is not a difficult subject all,” said the Boschfontein-born lass, Nombuso Thobela.

She is the proud mathematics teacher at Likhweti Primary School.

Only after six years of teaching has she been nominated to represent the province in the forthcoming National Teachers Awards next year. This comes after being the winner at the provincial teaching awards.

Thobela said, “In my classes, I go the extra mile, conducting one-on-one sessions with my learners where I see there is a problem. I also find new strategies for teaching to help learners understand the subject, such as integrating technology and music to entice learners’ involvement in numeracy skills,” she said.

Besides teaching the grade fours and sixes at her school, Thobela also offers mathematics lessons to a range of learners both from primary and high schools, on a WhatsApp group.

“How I wish to see a majority of learners taking careers in mathematics and science as the future of the world requires such scarce skills,” she said.
Thobela also helps teachers from other schools through the group. She is also one of the mathematics facilitators of the OR Tambo Maths Science and Technology Academy. Thobela can be reached on her WhatsApp number 079-964-3676.
