10 things to know about the Lowveld National Botanical Garden

The Lowveld Botanical Garden has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

1. It was established in 1969 through the support of both the local municipality and H.L. Hall & Sons.
2. It is one of a network of 10 national botanical gardens in South Africa.
3. The garden, together with the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden in Limpopo are managed, through the National Environmental Biodiversity Act (NEMBA), by the South African National Biodiversity Institute(SANBI).

4. The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries and Sappi have been supporting the Lowveld Garden with infrastructural developments and improvements for the past 15 years.
5. The Lowveld Botanical Garden comprises an area of 164 hectares.
6. The garden is supported by a local branch of the Botanical Society of South Africa (BotSoc).

7. The garden serves as a window and embassy of biodiversity and culture, playing key roles in the conservation, research and education of the general public and learners, through its displays, conservation and environmental education programmes.

8. It has always been supported by passionate plantsmen and women, who have over the years developed and enhanced the living collections and associated records of the garden.
9. It has always had a close association with the surrounding community in Mbombela, with some of the largest and consistent sponsors over the years being Sappi, BotSoc, Tsogo Sun Casinos and Southern Sun Emnotweni, always supported by the Lowveld media.
10. It has been an active participant of the Riverside Park Precinct Association for many years now.
