Learning through play during school holiday

The Dream Kids Holiday Programme is expected to expand beyond school holidays as part of its systemic and sustainability plan, where it will be rolled out in drop in centres, these are facilitated safe zones where learners come in the afternoon after school to do their homework and other activities.

During the third term school holidays  learners will be looking forward to a week break before the fourth school term begins.

Often learners from rural and peri urban areas do not have access to recreational activities to keep them occupied. Due to the harsh socio- economic conditions of poverty, unemployment and inequality that young children find themselves in, those that are more vulnerable to peer pressure often find themselves engaging in wrong activities such as bullying, alcohol abuse, drug use, sexual activities and abuse.

The Dream Kids Holiday Programme developed and implemented by Touch A Million a registered NPO in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development, has established a holiday school programme that seeks to address and provide learner psychosocial support in rural and peri urban areas in Mpumalanga since 2018.

During the September holidays the programme will be in Kabokweni township at Sandzile Primary School from the 23rd – 27th of September 2019. Activities for the week include arts, social recreational activities as well as interactive sessions. The objective is to provide a safe and engaging environment for learners to interact, socialise and engage with their peers over their school holidays period.

“We are glad that we have partnered with the Dream Kids Holiday Programme, This is an effective way of getting our children to engage with social issues in a two-way communication dialogue and fostering critical thinking on social matters they encounter in everyday lives”, said Zodwa Maseko Acting Chief Director Social Welfare Services Mpumalanga Department of Social Development.
