Mother arrested for beating up son in Ogies

The arrest came after a video of the boy being assaulted by his mother trended on social media.

A 35-year-old woman, Matshidiso Mtsweni who allegedly assaulted her 13-year-old son was arrested and appeared at the Ogies Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The arrest came after the video of the boy being assaulted while his mother is also seen in the clip trended on social media.

According to police, the mother’s anger may have been caused by a quarrel with her child. She then tied her son’s hands and legs with a rope against a pole at the veranda.

“She then assaulted him using a wooden stick and called her child as well as six other children aged between 10 and 15 who were playing soccer nearby to come and join in the assault until her son broke his right hand,” said the police.

On Tuesday, the mother was handed over to the police by a group of women from the community movement structure in the area.

She appeared in court and was granted a R500 bail and the case was postponed to October 8 pending further investigations. She faces a charge of assault with an intention to cause serious bodily harm.
