Alleged baby snatcher remanded in custody

The suspect who faces charges of contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act is expected to appear in court next month.

MBOMBELA- A 44- year- old woman appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court today after she was charged for the kidnapping of an infant.

On Monday, August 12 it was reported that Sheila Seba Graig was arrested at the Nelspruit SAPS Community Service Centre when she arrived with a one- month old baby.

Graig allegedly told the officers she needed to complete an affidavit to enable her to adopt the child. When asked about the whereabouts of the biological mother, she reportedly presented a signed affidavit purported to be from the mother who is based in Bellville, Cape Town.

Graig further gave the officers a contact number which was answered by a man who hung up when he heard  it was the police on the line.

Follow-up investigations revealed that the child was allegedly  kidnapped after birth at the Bellville Hospital by a female who allegedly pretended to be the relative of a 26-year-old mother who reportedly fell ill after giving birth.

Graig faces charges of contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act. Sne remains in custody and is expected back in court September 5, 2019 for a further bail application.
