Mom jailed for son’s death

All she wanted was to attend her son's funeral, but this was impossible as she was in custody for stabbing him to death.

MBOMBELA -Allen Monareng, an inmate at the Nelspruit Correctional Centre is serving 11 years after she was charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice at the Mhala Magistrate’s Court in April this year.

Four months later, she reflects on the tragic day that changed her life. Monareng admitted she committed a crime, but said it was not her intention to kill her only son.

“He arrived at home on the day and demanded my identity document because he wanted to withdraw money sent by his aunt. I refused and told him I would go as soon as I was done with the house chores.

“He started being aggressive and we wrestled for the knife in his possession. I pushed him away from me. Unfortunately, as he held the knife close to his chest, he fell facedown and it penetrated his chest.

“As he tried to flee, he ran out of the yard and fell a few metres away, he collapsed and passed way.”
She called her sister to tell her what had happened and asked her to call an ambulance. She went into hiding at an abandoned building at her workplace after realising her son was not breathing.

“I am not sure if she called or not, but it took longer than I expected. I then ran away and later on that day, my boyfriend called begging me to let him know where I was so we could talk. I refused because I was scared of what the community would do to me. I spent a few days in hiding and only went out in the evenings to get food at a shop until I was spotted by someone who called the police,” she recalled, tears flowing from her eyes.

She was then arrested and has since made peace with the fact that she has to pay the price for committing murder. But she said what breaks her heart is not knowing where her son was buried, as well as the rejection from her family, which she has not seen since the day she was sentenced.

She hopes they will understand one day that it was not her intention to kill her son and that the community will forgive her when she is released.
