About 420 promising young scientists showcased their innovative science and engineering investigations at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in the Bohlabela region’s science fair.

This regional expo, held at the Panorama High School, was one of 35 regional expos held annually in all provinces in South Africa. This year, two new municipal circuits namely Sabie and Casteel participated for the first time in the Bohlabela regional expo and more primary schools took part compared to the past years.

“As a region, we understand our mandate to empower our pupils to be self-sufficient and to protect and grow our country and economy, as well as produce pupils who will be globally competitive. It is important that we start instilling this culture in our children from a young age,” said Mhlongo.

The Eskom Special Award winners at the expo were Voster Brandon along with Janu Beukes and Zandri Hanekom from Hoërskool Lydenburg; and Gugu Shongwe and Silawule Khanani from Acorn to Oaks Comprehensive School.

A total of 37 learners received bronze medals at the expo, 23 received silver and 14 received gold. Learners from Hoërskool Lydenburg received the most number of gold medals and medals overall. A total of 24 learners will represent the Region at the International Science Fair (ISF) at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg, Gauteng from September 24 to 27.
