WATCH: Teacher suspended for invigilating holding a firearm

The school was advised to open a case against the teacher following his suspension.

A teacher from Mabusabesala Secondary School in Weltevrede in the Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality was suspended for invigilating a grade 11 midyear examination holding a firearm on June 4.

The provincial education department that suspended the teacher, said it had instituted an investigation to understand the circumstances that lead to the teacher’s conduct. The department said it will send officials to the school to counsel learners who may have been traumatised. The school was also advised to open a case with the police.

“The department will monitor the developments at the school very closely. This is an isolated incident and it will not be tolerated regardless of the circumstances. Those who are involved in the upbringing and moulding of children should always ensure that they set high moral standards. The department urges teachers and stakeholders to uphold the honour and dignity of the teaching profession and expose any behaviour that seeks to undermine this virtue,” said the department in a statement.
