Doctor arrested at a Pretoria mall for ignoring court order

MPUMALANGA – Dr Levy Choene Makgatho who was sought by the Hawks’ for failing to comply with a court order after a conviction has been arrested.

Makgatho was arrested on Tuesday at the Pretoria’s Silver Lakes Mall following tip-offs from community members. He appeared before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate Court on the same day and was remanded in custody until June 12.

According to the Hawks, it is alleged that in 2012 Makgatho opened surgeries and employed foreign nationals without qualifications and claimed cash from different medical aid schemes. He was arrested in June of the same year by members of the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for fraud after his criminal activities were uncovered.

“Makgatho was found guilty on October 18, 2017, by the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate Court. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment or a fine of R10 000 which will be wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused pays back a compensatory fine of R185 000 to Bonitas Medical Aid Scheme. No payments were made to Bonitas hence the court issued an order for his arrest,” said the Hawks.
