Education MEC visits school and home of murdered matriculant

MEC for education Sibusiso Malaza visited Ncakini High School on Friday following the death of 16-year-old matric learner, Nomthandazo Mbatha.

Nomthandazo’s body was retrieved from a shallow grave on Wednesday near the home of a fellow grade 12 learner, who is accused of murdering her.

It is alleged that the deceased left home for a study session on Monday April 8, but never returned home.

The following day, her parents reportedly conducted a search for her around the area, with no success. They, however, learned that she had last been seen with the suspect, after the study session on that day.

The suspect was scheduled to appear in the KaNyamazane Periodical Court on Friday on charges of murder, rape and defeating the ends of justice.
Malaza urged boys to work extra to regain trust from girls.

“It will be difficult for us to leave you alone with girls. You will need to work extra hard to regain our trust,” he said.

The suspect is described as a cool, smart boy who was always available to help other learners with schoolwork.

Malaza and his entourage also visited the bereaved family.

“We will wait for post-mortem results before announcing her funeral which we hope will take place next week before the Easter holiday,” said Loisa Mabuta, Nomthandazo’s aunt.
