The Mpumalanga Department of Education has considered the recommendations of the School Governing Body of Duvha Combined School at Emalahleni Local Municipality to expel two grade 9 learners who assaulted another learner in February this year.
This comes after a video went viral of a bullying incident that took place at the school last month.
Section 9 ( 5) of the Act states that if a learner who is subject to compulsory attendance in terms of the section is expelled from a public school, the Head of Department must make an alternative arrangement for his or her placement at a public school.

The department stated that because the two learners fall within the compulsory attendance age , the circuit manager has been tasked to enrol them in another school and to closely monitor their conduct.
“This decision will send a clear message that bullying will not be tolerated in schools,” reads a statement from the department.
