Municipal vehicles torched by protesters at Dwarsloop

Residents from Ga-Modibidi say they have been promised a proper road for a long time, but the municipality reneged on its promise.

Seven cars were torched in the early hours of this morning at the Dwarsloop Municipal Regional offices.

This comes after several community protests in demand of a tarred road to Ga-Modibidi area in Bushbuckridge. On Monday the community barricaded the R40 road to Dwarsloop with delivery trucks.

“Our road, which is the D4442 doesn’t even appear on the map, only the D3960 appears,” they said.

The community demands the upgrades of this road.

The executive mayor of Bushbuckridge, Cllr Sylvia Nxumalo has called for calm in the area stating that government has plans of constructing the D442 road in the 2019/20 financial year.

“The municipality, together with the department of Public Works, Roads and Transport have plans to construct the D4442 road in the 2019/20 financial year. We call for calm and request our communities to allow the municipality and the department space and time to implement the road project next year,” reads a media statement from Nxumalo’s office.

She also called on our law enforcers to do their work and bring the perpetrators to book.

“We will continue to engage all stakeholders to restore order in the area,” she said.
