14 buses impounded for overloading at Acornhoek Orpen

Buses and taxis along the Acornhoek Orpen road felt the wrath of the law yesterday as Transport Inspectors conducted a sting operation which led to the impounding of 17 public transport vehicles.

Sixteen of the vehicles which included fourteen buses and two minibus taxis were impounded for overloading and one minibus taxi for operating without a permit.

The Department of Public Works Roads and Transport said it was greatly concerned about the perpetual disregard for the law by most public transport operators since such behaviour result in catastrophic consequences.

“Unfortunately, commuters bear the brunt as such incidents put their lives at risk and failure to attend to these often leads to bloodshed on the road,” said the department in a statement.

“The Department would like to urge all public transport operators to ensure that they abide by the rules of the road to avoid road accidents and unnecessary penalties for non-compliance. Any behaviour that seeks to undermine the safety of other road users will never be tolerated. Commuters also have a responsibility to ensure that they alert authorities whenever they encounter situations that have a potential of exposing them to accidents,” reads the statement.
