Alleged bribing traffic officers suspended after video

The confrontation, which was recorded on video through a cellphone, occurred while the four were on duty in Badplaas in Albert Luthuli Local Municipality.

The traffic officers were placed on precautionary suspension following a complaint by a motorist.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane has announced on Wednesday that the four traffic officers who were involved in a confrontation with a certain motorist last week Thursday while they were on duty have been placed on a precautionary suspension pending the internal investigation.

The video was seemingly recorded by the motorist who also alleges that the police refused to open a case when he reported the matter at the local police station.

MEC Ngomane reiterated that he was deeply concerned by the video that was circulating on social media last week. He added that the video has the potential to undermine the community’s faith in the department’s efforts to effectively enforce the law on the road and therefore the matter should be urgently resolved. The traffic officers will also be afforded an opportunity to state their case through the investigation.

The MEC further stated that the department remains committed to ensuring that law enforcement is implemented without fear or favour which is why the four officials are placed on suspension. He, however, explained that the placement of the affected officials on suspension does not imply that they are guilty because they will also be given an opportunity to present their case to the investigation.
