Mpumalanga Provincial list goes through successfully

The provincial ANC parliamentary and legislature lists have been submitted to the national list without any glitches.

MBOMBELA – Despite earlier resistance by opposing local groups who had taken the matter to court in December.

According to the provincial spokesperson, Ms Sasekani Manzini, “The lists that were submitted from branches throughout the province, went through all the processes as laid down by Luthuli House. You must remember that from branch level, each candidate was scanned at Luthuli to ensure they met the criteria required.”

Asked why the provincial ANC Youth League issued a statement in December complaining about lack of adequate
representation of the youth in the lists, Manzini said, “It came as a surprise because the youth league was part and parcel of the processes that determined that the age barrier is extended from 35 to 40 years. If they were opposed to that factor, they had the platform to raise their objections at that stage of the processes.

“It was then that their objection would have been looked at. You can’t be part of processes tackled not only here, but at the national level, yet you chose to keep mum about it then you run to the media about it.

“According to the procedures under the strict scrutiny of Luthuli House, all candidates met the required criteria and the youth are represented by candidates whose names underwent strict scrutiny,” Manzini stated.

Responding to the postponed court action, “Those individuals went to court unprepared because they couldn’t produce the documentation required. We went there prepared.”

The lists will be announced at the end of January after being registered with the IEC.
The national list conference looked at the broad guidelines to ensure that the non-racial character of the ANC, gender parity and generational mix find practical expression in the list of its public representatives. The conference was emphatic that in instances where the adopted principles and guidelines are not met, it will not hesitate to intervene.
