Community stones Great North bus that arrived already full

One passenger was critically injured when waiting commuters stoned a bus in Mkhuhlu on Tuesday.

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mr Gillion Mashego has learnt with shock about the terrible incident that took place during the early hours of yesterday morning.

It is alleged that the bus was overloaded when it arrived to pick-up the commuters who in turned got angry and hurled the bus with stones injuring one passenger.

“As the custodian of public transport, the safety of all road users including commuters and drivers is of primary importance. The Department strongly condemns any act of violence and destruction of property regardless of the circumstances, “said Mashego.

Mashego is calling for calm as the Department together with various stakeholders including the SAPS are dealing with the matter.

“Engagements between the Department and all involved stakeholders particularly GNT are already at an advanced stage. A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, the 18th of December 2018 between Mpumalanga and Limpopo Government delegates where proposals will be presented for consideration and adoption to address GNT challenges, the outcome of which will be communicated to the public,” said Mashego in a statement.

Mashego has visited the injured passenger on Wednesday morning in the hospital and also conveyed well wishes to all those who have been physically and emotionally affected by this tragic experience.
