Police arrest a 22-year-old man for false firearm robbery

Police found eight firearms at the farm , four were found hidden in a nearby bush and the other four were retrieved from a dam.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man for falsely reporting to the police that six firearms were robbed from his residence on Monday. Mr Joshua Roux appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of perjury.

In his statement, he alleged that he was accosted by three men inside his house in the early hours of Monday, where one put a knife to his neck, demanding that he show them the safe. He alleged that from there on they took the firearms and fled the scene. The police then opened a case of house robbery and immediately launched a probe.

“The investigation, however, revealed there was no house robbery that ever took place, instead the suspect had taken the firearms and concealed them. The team managed to recover eight firearms. Four were found hidden in a nearby bush and the other four which he had allegedly thrown in a dam, were retrieved by the police’s diving unit,” explained Sgt Cynthia Mbokodo, spokesperson for the White River police.

He was remanded in custody pending his bail application on December 5.
