Local mine workers defraud SARS of R1.9 million

Lucky William Matse was released on warning and the case was postponed to December 4.

MPUMALANGA – Lucky William Matse appeared before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Mpumalanga for alleged income tax fraud valued at almost two million rands.

His co-accused Thommy Mduduzi Masango was also released on R5 000.00 bail and postponed to the same date for a specialised prosecutor.
According to the Hawks, it is alleged that between 2011 and 2014, Masango who was a Human Resource Manager at a local mine allegedly submitted fraudulent tax return claims to the South African Revenue Services on behalf of workers. As a result, SARS lost approximately R1.9 million. Masango and Matse were charged with 41 counts of fraud.
