Transport MEC leads N4 roadblock

Community, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane participated in stop and search operation by the provincial traffic officers and the police today on the N4 Toll Road between Mbombela and Malelane near Karino.

Activities like these will be heightened as the Festive Season approaches in order to enhance law enforcement visibility and road safety.

This is expected to assist with mitigating negative consequences of increased traffic volumes during the holiday season. Such include deadly crashes and injuries mostly due to human behaviour on the part of motorists.

Most of the light delivery vehicles and some SUVs stopped today were displaying LED lights which are hazardous to other drivers at night. They were ordered to remove those lights because they are not only illegal but they distract other drivers and may lead other motorists into causing avoidable crashes. Eight such vehicles were issued with a summons for the lights.

Fatigue and driver fitness was another issue as another motorist was ordered to pull off and rest because he looked visibly tired. He told the traffic officers he has been driving since early this morning from Johannesburg.

Ngomane further encouraged the traffic officers to continue working hard in order to ensure the safety of all road users. He believes that to have a crash-free holiday season is possible and it can happen with increased cooperation from all road users.

He encouraged visitors from other provinces to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy. He also appealed to them to obey traffic rules.
