2nd annual Dr Ntandoyenkhosi Mdluli’s Memorial Fun Run taking place this weekend

The purpose of the event is to promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activity.

This Saturday marks the second annual Dr Ntandoyenkhosi Mdluli’s Memorial Fun Run in KaBokweni. On the day, October 6, the late Mdluli would have turned 47, so it will be celebrated posthumously.
Organisers, Aggy-M Centre of Hope, have promised a bigger and better event with a variety of health awareness talks and more fun, which is a continuation of the legacy of Mdluli, who died in a tragic accident in 2015.

“He believed that medical treatment can be avoided or made effective through regular exercise. We also aim to create an atmosphere of social cohesion and networking of people from different backgrounds,” explained Mr Solly Mokoena, the CEO of the Aggy-M group.

Mokoena outlined the benefits of running to help in the building of strong bones, as it is a weight-bearing exercise, strengthening muscles, improving cardiovascular fitness,
burning kilojoules and maintaining a healthy weight.

Participants of the fun run are urged to assemble at Maporo Street from as early as 06:00 for the pre-run activities including registration. The whistle will blow at exactly
08:00 for the start of the fun run from Maporo Street to Ntandoyenkosi Medical Centre. Both young and old are invited for this health run. They will compete in
their different age groups. “Categories will include the u/15, the u/16 to u/20 years.

The 20 to 40 age group, the 40 to 60 age group, and the older citizens who are above 60 will participate in their own category,” adds Mokoena.
Prizes will be available for the top-15 winners, and will include free medical check-ups for blood pressure, oral hygiene and eye-care treatment.

“All participants will receive medals. They will also stand a chance of being winners of household appliances during a lucky draw,” he adds. He included that part of the proceeds will be used to contribute to the medical expenses of critically ill community members, counselling costs for victims of sexual assault and corrective surgeries for
children.

Aggy-M Centre of Hope was founded by Mdluli’s wife, Ms Mikateko Holeni Mdluli in 2017. It is involved in charitable activities, including the empowerment of women, child-grooming activities and poverty alleviation.
