We employed 31 270 people worldwide in 32 countries. The company is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (South Africa) and on the New York Stock Exchange in the United States of America.

SASOL OVER THE YEARS I HISTORICAL TIMELINE
Our business is global but our technological innovations and regional focus assists with our growth aspirations and our foundation businesses which has greatly contributed in reaching distinct milestones in our 68-year journey.
SOME OF THE MILESTONES ARE LISTED BELOW
1955:
The original coal-to-liquids (CTL) complex at Sasolburg, starts producing synthetic fuels and chemicals and the first eight drums of Creosote-the first Sasol product-are dispatched in March. In August, the Synthol reactor completes its first reaction.
1966:
South African Gas Distribution Company (now Sasol Energy) is formed to market and distribute pipeline gas.
1971:
Joint venture, Natref oil refinery, starts fuel production and Sasol petrol, developed for Formula One motor racing, is supplied for the first time.
1976:
Construction of R2,3 billion Sasol Two commences on Secunda site. Anew South African town is established – Secunda. Its Latin name meaning second, is appropriate as it was the second town established by Sasol following Sasolburg.
1979:
Sasol privatises and lists on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
1980:
Sasol Two synfuels and chemicals complex is completed and the first product, ammonia, is dispatched to the fertiliser industry.
1982:
Sasol Three-a replica of the Sasol Two complex-starts production.
1995:
First Sasol Advanced Synthol reactor come on line at Secunda.
2003:
• Sasol lists on the New York Stock Exchange in the United States.
• Construction of pioneering and environmentally-friendly gas-to-liquids (GTL) venture outside South Africa at Ras Laffan, Qatar commences.
2004:
• First natural gas from Mozambique arrives in Secunda through the cross border Pipeline.
• Sasol Oil (now Sasol Energy) merges with Exel Petroleum and enters the South African retail fuel market.
2006/2007:
• ORYX gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant in Qatar is commissioned and first product available.
• Sasol expands its chemicals business in China with the opening of office in Shanghai to market diverse range of chemical solvents in the region.
• Announces South Africa’s single largest broad-based BEE ownership transaction to date.
2012:
New R1 billion limestone ammonium nitrate granulation plant inaugurated at Secunda plant.
2014:
Sasol takes decision to proceed with Lake Charles Cracker Project (LCCP) in Louisiana, USA.
2018:
• Sasol and Air Liquide inaugurated a €200-million (about R2.9bn) air separation unit (ASU) at Secunda Synfuels Operations.
• Sasol Mining officially inaugurated the Shondoni Colliery as part of its R14 billion mine replacement programme.
