19 people killed in various crashes across Mpumalanga

Nineteen people died from several crashes recorded on various roads in the province since the beginning of the long weekend.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Pat Ngomane is appealing to motorists to use the road responsibly following nineteen fatalities resulting from several major crashes recorded on various roads since Friday.

He encouraged drivers to refrain from among others overtaking dangerously and also where visibility is restricted.

He further emphasised the importance of safe following distance and obeying of variable speed limits set on various speed limits on different roads saying that lives should not be lost needlessly due to negligence and recklessness of others.

A head-on collision has occurred around 15:20 on Sunday between a sedan and Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) on R540 Road between Lydenburg and Dullstroom. All the deceased were occupants of the SUV. The driver of a sedan who was the only occupant in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and rushed to Medi Clinic for medical attention. The deceased are believed to be Brazilian internationals. They were burnt beyond after their vehicle caught fire on impact.

A head-on collision between a truck and a sedan on the R546 road claimed six lives.
The crash occurred at approximately 12h30 on Saturday between Kinross and Embalenhle, closer to the Evander golf course.

Five of the deceased were burnt beyond recognition and they include a 3-year-old child.

All the deceased were occupants in the sedan and no serious injuries were reported among the truck occupants.

Three more lives were brought to an abrupt end when two vehicles collided on R547 Road

On Friday evening R547 Road saw a crash that led to four fatalities when a bakkie with a trailer collided sideswipe with a truck. The deceased include a child.

The MEC has also called on traffic officers not to be discouraged by this crashes but instead encouraged to work in order to save lives on the road.

He is also sending condolences to the affected families.
