Police arrest 10 people for Machadodorp violence

All the commotion started after two men from a local security company, Bruce Botha (29) and Wayne Swart (20), allegedly assaulted a community member on September 10.

Following the recent spate of violent protests at Machadodorp last week, 10 people were subsequently arrested, six on Friday and four on Monday.

The six suspects, Ms Pricilla Maelane (26), Mr Donald Mafika (26), Mr John Thela (52), Ms Khomotso Chiloane (33), Mr Sipho Bholosha (18) and Ms Khanyi Ceza (42) appeared at the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They were released on R300 bail each. They will appear again in the same court on October 3.
The other four suspects will also appear at the same court soon, pending further investigation.

Three trucks were burnt when the community barricaded the N4 road on September 14. The provincial traffic offices in the area were also burnt. A local shop was looted and torched by the community on September 11 when they also stormed the local police station.

It seems that the problem started when the victim had a fight with another man employed by a local businessman (whose shop was later burnt) . The businessman alerted the security company, hence the assault. Botha and Swart were arrested on September 11. They were released on R500 bail each by the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on September 14.
